Cheltenham is arguably the prettiest beach in Devonport and a favourite among locals. Facing east, it offers a perfect vantage point to watch the sunrise over Rangitoto Island. The beach is busiest during hot summer days, attracting people from near and far who come to swim, sunbathe, and picnic in the nearby parks.
The golden sandy beach is ideal for taking a stroll, having a paddle, or swimming in the sheltered water. At low tide, the beach expands, with exposed mudflats extending more than 100m toward the Rangitoto Channel. During a strong onshore wind, the location becomes a magnet for kiteboarders.
The beach has always been a popular destination. In the late 1800s, a horse-drawn tram ran along the waterfront, bringing visitors from the ferry.
